We all know that engineers are awesome, and throughout the centuries there have been a number of famous engineers who have changed the face of our society. However it might surprise you to learn that a number of individuals famous for other reasons, such as their acting talents, also originally trained in the engineering industry, and here we take a quick look at some famous actors who are engineers too!

Sir Michael Gambon

There’s no denying that Sir Michael Gambon is a hugely talented actor, however it might surprise you to learn that he has a few other hidden talents too. Despite leaving school at the age of 15 with no formal qualifications, between the ages of 18 – 21, Gambon worked as an apprentice toolmaker and by the age of 21 had become a fully qualified engineer.

Rowan Atkinson

Whilst he might be more famous for his antics as the infamous Mr. Bean, Rowan Atkinson is also an electrical engineer, having received his degree from Newcastle University back in 1975. He also went on to complete a Masters in Electrical Engineering too, from Queens College, Oxford no less.

Ashton Kutcher

Actor Ashton Kutcher originally studied at the University of Iowa where he was majoring in biochemical engineering, and was reportedly inspired by a desire to find a cure for his brother’s heart condition. However it was also during this time that his acting talent was discovered and he eventually dropped out of college to pursue a career in modelling and acting instead. Interestingly though, he has maintained a keen interest in technology, and was recently announced as a new product engineer for the company Lenovo.

Dolph Lundgren

Better known for his role in a number of action films including Rocky and The Expendables, Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren initially pursued a career in engineering. He attended the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, graduating with a degree in chemical engineering, and also went on to obtain a Masters in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sydney, obtaining the highest results in his class. He was also later awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). However during this time he also got his first taste of show business, working as a bouncer and providing security for the likes of Grace Jones. He was soon to rethink his academic goals, deciding instead to study the art of acting, and went on to become an action movie legend.
