Airedale Springs has a long history of manufacturing a broad range of different spring designs for many applications. With over 70 years of experience as spring suppliers, we have developed an impressive catalogue of options and services, enabling us to swiftly turn innovative ideas into physical creations. Below is a selection of the spring designs we supply.

Tension Springs

Otherwise known as extension springs, tension springs are designed to allow a force to be applied. The most identifiable element of their design is usually the hooks or loops at either end of their cylindrical coiled body. These loops are where the spring is attached to other components, and as force is applied to stretch the spring, it uses tension to return it to a resting position. It does this because the way the spring is wound opposes extension. The tension applied during the winding dictates the load the spring can withstand.

Tension springs are commonly applied in machinery, robotics, levers and the automotive industry. As an experienced tension spring manufacturer, we can supply high-quality tension springs to suit a broad range of applications and various materials. Working with our expert design team, we can customise and manufacture tension springs with crossover, machine loops, swivel hooks and special inserts.

Garter Springs

Garter springs are helical springs assembled from a collection of extension springs that connect their ends to create a circle which provides a substantial radial force. This loop is created when either one end is coned so that it fits tightly into the opposing end and makes a nib point, or it can be hooked onto that end externally. These springs provide a constant radial force, exerting it on their application and creating a pressurised seal that prevents any passage of contaminants or any leaks.

As the leading garter spring manufacturer in the UK, we can supply garter springs in lengths or pre-assembled into these loops to suit your needs. Our high-quality garter springs are often applied in shaft or oil seals, motor drive belts and conveyor systems and are made from carbon steel or stainless steel wire. Our selection of state-of-the-art CNC machines allows us to manufacture bulk orders or small batches of garter springs specifically designed to fit your desired specification.

Compression Springs

Compression springs are helical springs with an open coil. This design offers an inherent resistance to any compressive force applied along a single axis. This is the most well-known spring design and usually the first one people imagine when they hear the word spring. Compression springs are incredibly adaptable and have played an integral role in many mechanical applications in industry as well as domestic.

The essential process that compression springs provide is that when pressure is applied to a compression spring, it pushes back against the applied load. There are many types of compression springs to suit various applications, but they all have this aspect in common.

Not every application is best suited to every compression spring design. Beyond the classic cylindrical compression spring, which most people are familiar with, we can supply conical, barrel and hourglass spring designs, each with its own benefits and preferred application.

As an experienced compression spring manufacturer, we have supplied many different compression spring designs to many varied companies to suit the exacting specifications they require, including ground or unground ends. We also produce the previously mentioned compression spring designs in various materials. With our state-of-the-art CNC manufacturing equipment, we can create compression springs in stainless steel, carbon spring steel, beryllium copper, and many alternatives to best meet our client’s needs

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs have a different focus compared to compression springs despite the similar coil appearance. Therefore, this spring is best applied to meet the requirement of an angular movement with connecting legs attached to other components. The mathematical description of a torsion spring is that it has a linear characteristic. The torque is equal to force x leg length: M=F x A with less counter force applied the further down the leg the pressure is.

The most common design for a torsion spring is the helical looped design that allows it to work in a twisting, rotational motion. Still, most spring manufacturers, such as us, will provide multiple options, such as a double coil. Double torsion spring designs are when two singles are connected, usually a balanced combination of left and right-hand coiled bodies that create a balance as they work in parallel. A double torsion spring will have double the effectiveness of a single, even if they are both the same size. We can supply various designs of double torsion springs, customised legs and centre sections, or bodies pitched open or closed.

Hinges, counterbalances and lever return applications are best suited to torsion springs. For example, car door handles are usually equipped with an internal torsion spring that assists the return of the handle to its resting position by exerting rotary torque force. Double torsion springs are typically suited to work over a shaft that runs through the coiled bodies and securely fixes the legs or connecting centre section.

Wire forms

Wire forms are the name given to any shaped wire manufacturing process. This title covers many possibilities, as wire forms can take almost any structure. These varied designs can be made from several different metals, such as stainless steel, copper, or aluminium, to meet the eventual application requirements. They can even be made with either round or flat wire. The specifications to consider are the wire thickness, design, and material.

Everyone will come across a wire form during their daily activities. Electrical devices, hooks and light fittings are all typical applications for high-quality wire forms. You can find them in safety equipment, telecommunications, textile machinery and much more.

At Airedale Springs, our manufacturing services are not limited to a set number of spring designs. Instead, our expert engineers can produce a wide variety of wire forms to suit any application’s needs. In addition, our high-speed CNC machines can manufacture bespoke, high-quality wire form designs in large batches.
