The NHS is under a lot of pressure, so we’re happy to help in any way we can. Recently, we were also able to help another spring company complete an order for 8000 ventilators.
Medical Ventilators Challenge
G&O Springs, a precision spring manufacturing company for aerospace and safety critical applications, approached us to help them complete an order for ventilators.
The spring company is part of the VentilatorChallengeUK, a project that includes the manufacture of 8,000 Smiths Medical Parapac Ventilators. This mission was undertaken by a consortium of UK industrial, technology and engineering businesses in aerospace, automotive and medical industries, including G&O Springs.
The ventilators are being assembled in 11 different facilities, with 40 of them built per shift. The spring companies involved produced or sourced springs based on their capabilities and material stocks, which means that the whole project was a team effort.
G&O Springs were quick to complete their orders – they received the enquiry at lunchtime on Friday and most parts were in production by Saturday (they collected materials for one of the last jobs on Sunday). The products were ready to go by the following Friday and each spring was individually packed in trays, ready for delivery.
G&O Springs are now working with Rolls Royce on the redesign of two of the existing ventilator valves to make them easier to produce, as well as more stable. Other companies in the consortium are also accelerating production of two agreed designs.
The consortium intends to deliver medical ventilator designs that meet specific requirements, as well as deliver additional ventilators to the NHS in conjunction with other organisations.

Airedale Springs Are Doing Our Part
We have written about how important springs in the medical sector are, especially at the moment. Being able to complete such a project is incredible, and Airedale Springs is thrilled to be able to contribute.
G&O Springs required specialised wire they couldn’t find anywhere else, so they turned to us. We work with a wide variety of materials, so we were able to provide them exactly what they were looking for. This wire was then used for the specific springs they designed and manufactured.
We were also happy to be able to offer a rapid turnaround on this. Speed is of the essence when it comes to these types of projects – as well as products – so we ensured G&O Springs received the wire on time for the quick completion of their orders.
So, while we haven’t produced springs for VentilatorChallengeUK, we were one of the first companies to respond with help and we contributed specialised wire we had in stock for this important project.
